Best French Onion Soup
Instructions:
  1. Caramelize the Onions: Thinly slice the onions and cook them slowly in butter over low heat until golden brown and caramelized, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Deglaze the Pan: If using, add a splash of dry sherry or white wine to the pan to deglaze it, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom for added flavor.
  3. Simmer with Broth: Pour in the beef broth and add fresh thyme leaves, salt, and pepper. Simmer the soup for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  4. Prepare the Crocks: Arrange oven-safe crocks or bowls on a baking sheet. Place a few toasted baguette slices in each crock and ladle the hot soup over them.
  5. Top with Cheese: Generously sprinkle grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the soup in each crock, covering the surface completely.
  6. Broil to Perfection: Preheat the broiler and place the baking sheet with the crocks under the broiler until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Carefully remove the crocks from the oven and serve the Best French Onion Soup piping hot, garnished with additional fresh thyme leaves if desired.
  8. Storage Methods: Store any leftover French Onion Soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave until warmed through before serving.
  9. Vegetarian Twist: Substitute vegetable broth for the beef broth and use a combination of caramelized onions, leeks, and shallots for added depth of flavor.
  10. Herb Infusion: Experiment with different herbs like rosemary, sage, or bay leaves to add complexity and aromatic notes to the soup.
  11. Grain-Free Option: Skip the bread or use gluten-free bread for a grain-free version of the soup that’s still packed with flavor.
